Best Beaches in Cuba
The beaches in Cuba are famous around the world for their amazing blue water and stretches of soft white sand. Because there are so many great beaches, you really don't need to worry about finding a perfect one. And there are just too many to actually make a reasonable list. So here are some of the better-known beaches and those with popular resorts nearby.
Cayo Coco
Cayo Coco is one of those Cuban islands that is dominated by beaches and resorts. If you want to see any real Cuban culture, you'll have to head to the mainland because Cayo Coco is strictly for tourists only. If you are going to Cayo Coco, you can arrive directly by plane to the Jardines del Rey Airport that is right on the island. Or if you are already in Cuba, you can actually drive there on the causeway that connects the island to the rest of Cuba.
Cayo Largo del Sur
Another island off the southern coast of Cuba, Cayo Largo del Sur is home not only to beaches but also to several live coral reefs. It's perfect for anyone who enjoys scuba diving or snorkeling. The resorts are not as busy as those on Cayo Coco or Varadero, so the beaches are somewhat quieter.
Varadero
I think Varadero is the most well-known beach area in Cuba, and it can be quite busy during the summer holiday season. The beaches there are along a thin peninsula off the north coast. It's an easy drive from the capital city of Havana (about 2 hours) if you want to see some Cuban countryside on the way. Or you can get a flight to the Juan Gualberto Gomez Airport that is close by. There are more than 20 km of beaches in Varadero, and the Hicacos Point Natural Park is another attraction while you are there.
Isla de la Juventud
The Isla de la Juventud is an island near Cayo Largo del Sur, and it's a great tourist destination because there is more to do than just the beaches. Of course, beaches like Playa Bibijagua and Playa Largo are still ideal on their own to visit. But you can also go cave-exploring and scuba diving around the island. There is a ferry that can take you from the mainland, and there is a small airport on the island if you prefer to fly.
Holguin
And the last beach area I wanted to mention is near the town of Holguin. The most well-known beach here is Playa Esmeralda (named for the emerald colour of the water). Really, it's just gorgeous. Holguin is an interesting town to visit, and gives you a chance to get away from the resorts after you're done at the beach. You can go hiking in the forested mountains outside the town if you enjoy seeing some wilderness.
